Chirnside
cont.
There are two village parks, a tennis court and multipurpose games
area and a football pitch - the home ground of Chirnside Football
Club. The village has a thriving Bowling Club and it's bowling green
must be one of the best in the Borders with stunning views across
the Merse.
There
are four pubs in and around Chirnside, three of which provide overnight
accommodation. The Waterloo Inn at the foot of the Crosshill is
an old coaching inn. In 1985 it was listed in the "Good Pub Guide".
At the top of the Crosshill is the 230-year-old Red Lion Inn, popular
with the locals. Naismiths Arms (better known as Mitchells) is towards
the west and the Chirnside Country House Hotel is to the east of
the village - famous for accommodating cast members from the film
"Mrs Brown" during filming.
Chirnside railway station still exists although it was closed to
passenger traffic on 10 September 1951. Freight traffic continued
until 19 July 1965. Much of the old line can be followed but most
of the stations on the line from Reston to St. Boswells are now
private houses.
